きょうは語句と語句をつなげる役目、接続詞について学びましょう。
ピピさんが聞き取れなかったという単語whileは、ここでは前後の語句をつなげる役目をする接続詞（conjunction）です。whileがどんなときに使われるのかみてみましょうね。
①「・・・するあいだに、・・・と同時に（during the time that, or at the same time as）」
②「・・・であるのに対し（despite the fact that; although）、一方では・・・（compared with the fact that; but）」
本文にでてきたwhileはこの最後の例と同じで、ちょっとむずかしく説明すると「主節の情報と対照的な，もしくは多少とも相反する情報を提供する従属節を導く」whileで「～ではある一方，～ではあるものの」の意味です。
主語、と同じく、メインとなるほうの語句を「主節（main clause）」、くっついて説明しているほうの語句を「従属節（ subordinate clause）」といいます。whileがついている方が従属節よ。
本文にもどってみてみると、 It is unbearable, while the coolness of night must be comfortable. で、主節はIt is unbearableね。この文の前で砂漠の昼間の暑さについて書いてあるから、それ（It）は砂漠の昼間の暑さのこと、それが「たまんねーべや（unbearable）」だけれども、「一方で(while)」のあとにくるのは従属節のthe coolness of night must be comfortable. つまり、ひんやりとした夜は気持ちいいべな～（comfortable）と言っているの。
